According to Stop AAPI Hate, there were 3,795 reported incidents of anti-Asian hate between March 2020 and February 2021. Every day on my social media newsfeeds, there’s a new video of someone being pushed or kicked or screamed at while being out and about their day. In particular, our elders are being assaulted and, in at least a handful of cases, literally killed on the streets.
It created a huge language and cultural gap between us, and despite all their sacrifices, I’ll still never be white. More often than we’d like to admit, our choices are subconscious, shaped by what we see reflected back to us. This can be especially challenging when assessing data for women belonging to different AAPI subpopulations. The Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander community is a vibrant, diverse, and growing segment of the U.S. population. It is past time to remedy that oversight, which has roots in racial, ethnic, and gender biases. Representing Hawaii as Democratic Senator, Hirono has supported women’s reproductive rights, health care reform and is currently leading the legislation to combat the rise in Asian hate crimes in the U.S. She was the first Asian American woman to be elected to the Senate, the first Buddhist Senator and the first U.S. senator born in Japan. Before Tammy Duckworth and Madam Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn in, Hirono was the only person of Asian descent serving in the U.S.
Shruti Mukkamala is a senior staff psychologist at the University of California, Irvine. Her research interests include understanding the experiences and mental health impacts of intersectional discrimination and developing culturally sensitive ways to cope with and resist discrimination. Dr. Mukkamala provides mental health services to a diverse student body at the University, and is interested in helping women of color, immigrant, and international students achieve their academic and life goals. Angel Chen is a Managing Director in Deutsche Bank Wealth Management’s Family Office Practice. She and her team work with corporate executives, private equity, real estate enterprises, hedge fund principals, entrepreneurs domiciled in the US and abroad, family foundations, and family offices.
Traffic in Asian Women
There’s been an alarming spike in violence against women of Asian descent in the U.S. Don Gonyea speaks with Sung Yeon Choimorrow of The National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum about the safety concerns of Asian and Asian-American women in the U.S. She also revitalized the Harvard Asian American Alumni Alliance in Los Angeles and now runs the National H4A Arts & Entertainment division which highlights books, series and features by Asian Americans. H4A has chapters in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Washington, DC. Jennifer is on the board of the Harvard Club of Southern California. Jennifer is part of the schools committee which interviews all candidates interviewing for Harvard College. After the family returned to the USA, they spent a few years in Connecticut and San Francisco before settling in Orange County, California. At her childrens’ school, Ginger became a strong advocate for Asian parents with English language difficulties.
